StorageTek
Challenge
StorageTek needed an automated robotic test system developed to meet a challenging product introduction and volume production goal for a new product being developed. The need was to test the PCB prior to volume manufacturing, which at the time relied on very slow and tedious manual trouble-shooting which took anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours. The goal was to replace this manual process with an automated process taking just minutes.
Solution
This project utilized HWI's capabilities of robotics, mechanics, automation, firmware, electrical design and systems integration. We were able to quickly automate the testing process by buying and integrating off-the-shelf components, including lLinear slides, VXI bus components, and motor controllers. In addition, many components were custom developed: VXI bus error circuitry, all motion control software, all system integration software, and the Z-axis probe. The development process was completed at HWI, with final integration implemented at StorageTek's facility in Louisville.
Key Benefits
HWI completed the entire project, including delivery of the first unit in just six weeks. This was much quicker than internal project estimates, which meant they were able to meet an aggressive product introduction goal.
